INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE

UNIVERSITY BUILDING

Location
Paris, France

Industry
Education

Designed the interior of the 6-story main campus building of the American University of Paris in alignment with its brand identity (also by Leland), and in accordance with the design directives of major donors, who funded this project.

Included selection of all flooring, lighting, trim details, paint colors and furniture, in addition to the custom design of several furniture pieces such as the café bar, reception desk and media lab workstations.

THE CHALLENGE

We were asked to take over the interior architecture of this already mid-stream building renovation project, 3 months prior to its scheduled completion in order to guide the aesthetic in a direction consistent with the University’s brand identity.

This required a 180° pivot from the original design, necessitating the last-minute change of several materials orders to comply with new, ambitious design directives.

STATE OF
THE BUILDING

When we took over the project, the building had already been gutted from floor to ceiling. All materials orders were on hold due to disagreements over design, and we only had 3 months left before the building had to be ready for classes to hold session.

DESIGN

Though significantly more ambitious than the original plans, we delivered our design on time – complete with 27 paint colors, 10 types of flooring, and over 200 pieces of antique furniture sourced from flea markets and upcycle shops.

CUSTOM
FURNITURE

We designed several pieces of custom furniture and hired our own carpentry team to expedite the building process.

MAKING OF

For the extent of the project our team practically lived on the building site, working day and night to bring the project to completion, in time for classes to resume on schedule.
